AGAGO. The police are hunting a teacher who is reported to be on the run after a sister he is said to have beaten took her own life.

The 16-year-old girl was a Primary Five pupil at Patongo Primary School in Patongo Town Council
Her brother, Patrick Okello, is a teacher at the same school.

The police said the weekend incident occurred in Lapono Sub-county, Agago District.
A case of suicide by hanging has been registered at Lapono Police Post.

The Aswa River region police spokesman, Mr David Ongom Mudong, said: “The brother is still on the run, but we urge him to handover himself voluntarily to any nearby police to help with investigation.”

He said the police were conducting more inquiries into the matter.

Mr Ongom said the teacher sent his sister to fetch water on Friday but she reportedly delayed, “promoting the brother to beat her seriously that evening and again the next morning of Saturday.”.

“On Saturday afternoon, the brother again sent her to the garden to uproot cassava, but the deceased never returned home until Sunday when a search for her was conducted and her lifeless body was found, with a rope around the neck, hanging by a tree in the garden,” Mr Ongom said in a statement.

He said the police in Agago visited the scene and recorded statements from relevant sources.
